I must be lucky in that I don't get many cold calls. I do, however, answer pretty much every call I get on my mobile. The reason being that I am a contractor, my CV is on several job sites and I do receive a fair few calls from real people with real possible contract opportunities. So if I miss a call I may miss my next contract.
Having my CV online means my phone number is fairly accessible so the cretins of the world will eventually come across it and I get the occasional cold-call.
My favourite scam calls are where the "human" on the other end claims that they are from Microsoft and have detected errors on my PC. They need to help me - likely for ridiculous amounts of money - remove these issues.
Easiest way to get rid of them? Hang up. Nobody has ever lost money by hanging up on a cold-caller.
Second easiest way to get rid of them? Ask them a few questions.
A good one is; how did you get my phone number from my PC?
Yes, I suppose it's feasible that the real Microsoft may receive error messages from my PC but I can't see how they would be able to find my phone number from those error messages.
Another good question; what is my IP address?
I had one lady try to bluff it by inventing a random IP address so I let her finish and then said "is it really?" and then "wow". She must've detected the sarcasm because she hung up straight away.
Another good ploy is to ask to put them on hold and see how long they wait for.
Recently I had someone on who was trying to sell me "education" about CFDs. Rather than hang up I listened for a while then politely explained that I wasn't interested because CFDs attract tax on profits. He tried to deflect this but didn't have any reasonable defence so I said I wasn't interested and hung up.
It was only afterwards I had the idea that next time I would ask for 3 years' trading records. Anyone who is selling "education" about making money from CFDs would surely have a long track record of making money themselves?
No proof, no sale.
